How to Properly Use and Maintain a Direct Thermal & Impact Receipt Printer?

Avoid Harsh Environments & Perform Regular Cleaning

Printers should not be used in harsh environments such as those with high humidity or excessive dust. These conditions directly degrade print quality and shorten the overall service life of the device.

We recommend performing regular cleaning and maintenance during operation:

• Sweep paper scraps and dust from both the interior and exterior surfaces of the printer.
• Use a lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to wipe dirt and residue off the thermal printhead surface.
• For impact printers, clean paper dust and debris from the printhead carriage and platen roller, then apply a small amount of approved lubricant to the guide screw to ensure smooth movement.

Read the User Manual Before Use

Before operating any printer, carefully read the included user manual. Always follow the specified operating procedures — this is not optional.

The manual covers:

• Correct installation steps (driver setup, interface connection, paper loading).
• Model-specific button functions and LED indicator meanings.
• Troubleshooting tables for common error codes and symptoms.
• Maintenance intervals and warranty conditions.

Skipping the manual is the number one cause of avoidable hardware failures. Take 10 minutes to review it before your first print job.

Use the Supplied Power Adapter & Quality Paper

Always use the power adapter that came with the printer (or an officially certified replacement). Using an incorrect or low-quality adapter can cause voltage instability, which may damage the mainboard or printhead over time.

Equally important is the choice of printing media:

• For thermal printers: Use high-quality thermal paper with the correct coating grade. Cheap paper leaves chemical residue on the printhead, shortening its life and causing streaky output.
• For impact printers: Use carbonless multi-ply paper within the specified thickness range. Overly thick paper stacks increase wear on the print head pins and the platen roller.
• Store paper in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight to prevent curling or coating degradation before use.

Auto-Cutter Safety: Wait Before Opening the Cover

For models equipped with an auto-cutter, you must confirm that the cutting action has fully completed and the cutter blade has retracted before opening the top cover. Opening the cover prematurely can cause:

• Paper jams — the partially cut sheet gets caught in the mechanism.
• Cutter blade deformation — the blade may bend or misalign if obstructed mid-cycle, leading to future incomplete cuts or jamming.

Avoid Prolonged Heavy Printing on Impact Printers

When using an impact (dot-matrix) receipt printer, avoid printing very dark or very wide solid lines for extended periods. Here's why:

When printing a thick black line, only a single pin (or a small group of pins) in the printhead fires continuously. This causes localized temperature rise at those specific pins. However, because the rest of the printhead remains cool, the printer's overall thermal sensor does not trigger the overheat protection mode. The result: those few pins overheat and can be permanently damaged, leading to missing dots in subsequent prints.

Recommended practice: When you need to print dark or wide lines on an impact printer, replace them with alternative symbols or patterns (such as hatch patterns, dashed lines, or repeated characters like "====" or "****") that distribute the workload across more pins.
